Research Paper ( Reasons behind increasing obesity in USA, KSA and China )

Abstract

Obesity has become an important concern amongst the developed nations over the past few decades. The increase in obesity is attributed to many social and economic factors but its rise has serious implications on the overall health of individuals. This situation is alarming for the mankind as it may result in increasing diseases like Diabetes, Cancer, Cardiovascular diseases and other chronic disorders. This study is aimed to examine the main reasons behind increasing obesity amongst the population of USA, Saudi Arabia and China. It has analyzed various social, cultural and economic factors that have led to the increase of this trend in these countries. The data available through various researches has been evaluated in order to draw concrete findings. A detailed analysis of all aspects has revealed that a change in eating habits, too much intake of fast food, rise of economic status and avoidance of physical activities appear to be the main cause  behind obesity prevailing in USA,  Saudi Arabia and China.

Reasons behind increasing obesity in USA, KSA and China

Obesity is a medical situation in which the excessive fat gets accumulated in a human body resulting in having adverse effects on human health. Obesity can increase the chances of chronic illnesses like heart problems, diabetes, some types of cancers, arthritis, liver and kidney issues etc. Obesity is mainly an outcome of excessive food intake followed by lack of physical activities. According to Chan &Woo (2010), “These dietary changes are compounded by lifestyle changes that reflect reduced physical activity at work and during leisure time”. Obesity has now become a growing cause of death worldwide, with its alarming prevalence amongst children and adults. Western developed nations are the worst affected with obesity where it is sometimes classified as a disease.

Nutrition and health analysts are taking keen interest in getting to know the reasons behind the rise of obesity in different countries. Most of them believe that obesity stems from behavioral issues, hormonal and genetic problems and other physical disorders. The studies have however, revealed that various social, economic and cultural factors are responsible for increasing this body condition in different countries. The aim of this study is to evaluate the main reasons behind increasing obesity in countries like USA, KSA and China. It will study various social, cultural and economic aspects that may contribute towards increasing this body illness amongst the population of these countries. Therefore, the study will analyze the claim that the “increase of obesity in USA, Saudi Arabia and China is a culmination of recent social, cultural and economic changes brought in their societies”.

In order to evaluate the validity of the thesis claim, this study has been based upon the
review of  literature that depicts the study findings of  various researchers related to the topic. This study aims to focus on the social, cultural and economic aspects of each country individually in order to obtain separate findings belonging to each culture. This analysis will provide results that will present useful information about the reasons behind increasing obesity levels in USA, China and Saudi Arabia.

                                                            Obesity in USA

Obesity in America has become more like a disease due to its increasing influx in the
society. Some experts say that the reason behind this problem is the change in the eating trends and habits in society over the last recent decades. It has been observed that the intake of calories consumed by the kids in the present age is higher than the intake of the kids in the past decades (Newfield, 2005).Though , the amount of food may be the same but the content of fat and sugar involved in it is definitely higher. The cultural trends support the large intake of fast foods. The advent of having super sized meals with big deals is an attraction for various food lovers. Also these deals offer free drinks as per client’s choice and some would even give supplementary drinks free. These rising trends have largely emerged due to the massive spread of the International Food chain restaurants across the globe. Although the food quality that they offer is good but the amount of fats and sugar involved in the ingredients of their items is surely alarming for human health. As stated by Cutler et al.,2003, the use of French fries “as a dominant form of potato in America” is also a main factor to increase obesity due to its high sugar and calorie content. Also people tend to ignore eating vegetables and fruits and face an imbalance in the number of calories consumed.

The decline in the physical activities due to a change in the social set up of the American society is another cause of increasing obesity. People keep themselves limited to their offices and homes and use modern means of transport to commute instead of bicycling. The availability of computers, mobile phones and internet has slowed down the level of social interactions that existed in the past. People remain busy with these electrical gadgets and enjoy eating more by using them as a mode to relax. The concept of walking and jogging remains limited to summer season only. The schools also do not offer too many opportunities to engage students in physical activities and encourage indoor activities mostly. The reason they give behind following this strategy is the security concerns. But these factors eventually result in less consumption or burning of fats in our body and therefore lead to health problems like obesity from the early ages.

The developed economy uplifts the financial status of the society. When earnings increase, spending also increase. Therefore, in a developed country like USA, where the standard of living is generally higher, there is a high tendency towards eating outside home. According to Newfield(2005), “In the span of three decades ,from the 1940s to the 1970s, the number of sodas consumed in a year by a single person increased by 580%”.These trends are an indication that an increase in the intake of sugary drinks and fatty products  ultimately results in causing obesity. Some other factors can also be responsible for the rise of obesity in USA. These factors include the use of steroid hormones, drugs and anti depressants. These medicine cause changes in the body and can lead to obesity. Also, for some Americans, obesity may come as a part of inheritance. These factors can only influence a minor portion of the population only. The major reasons for obesity in USA still remain the cultural, social and economical changes that a US society has seen over the past few decades.

Obesity in Saudi Arabia

Just like the other developed economies that are enjoying the luxurious life styles at the cost of health, Saudi Arabian population is also increasingly becoming a victim of obesity. Although the existence of obesity in Saudi Arabia is lower than the countries like USA, Germany, Canada, Spain etc. but the presence is still there and is following an increasing trend. Based upon El-Hazmi & Warsay (2002) study, Saudi Arabia has seen many changes  in the nutritional habits or activities of children during the past three decades so this may be the probable cause of increasing obesity levels in the Saudi society.

Studies have shown that “In the Arabic Peninsula, rates of obesity and overweight have
increased dramatically since 1980, and more than one third of the Arabic Gulf population is obese”. (Abuzaid,2012).These increasing rates have emerged largely as a steady growth of their economy over the past few  decades. The increasing financial standards providing a luxurious living style and decreasing physical activities has led to the increase of obesity in the Saudi society. Some other studies conducted on obese children and adolescents in a Saudi Society revealed that this age group consumes more servings of meat grain items, fast food, drinks with high content of sugar and potato chips ( Al-Nakeeb et al.,2012). This results in increasing their overall calorie intake.

In addition to the cultural and economic factors being responsible for the increasing obesity in Saudi Arabia, some additional factors have also played a major role for its growing presence. These factors include lack of availability of public parks , grounds or clubs for sports activities that can involve youth in healthy physical activities. The existence of hot climate is also another hurdle in promoting outdoor sports activities in this region. The indoor sports facilities are also not sufficient. So these are the possible reasons why the youth in Saudi Arabia is less active than the other countries. According the study conducted by Abuzaid(2012),the existence of obesity and overweight has drastically increased during the past four decades and is now reaching alarming levels. This trend seems to be quite visible amongst the urban population of Saudi Arabia. Therefore, these environmental and cultural influences together become the root cause of the increasing rate of obesity in a Saudi society.

Obesity in China

The existence of obesity in China is relatively lower than USA but its increasing tendency is becoming a major concern. The problem of obesity is on an increasing side in the recent decade and has now resulted in recognizing obesity as an important public health issue in China. The number of obese and overweight persons in China has increased considerably and the figure jumped from 14.6% to 21.8% in 1992 and 2002( Huang  et al.,2013).This emerging trend in Asia is a part of westernization that has changed the lifestyle patterns to a greater extent. Giving up on doing physical exercise due to study and job commitments has become a nationwide trend amongst the new generation.

The growth of Chinese economy has also played a major role in increasing obesity levels amongst its population. In the rural China, the rate of being overweight and having diabetes is lower due to the physical activity involvement. However, in cities due to the high profile economy resulting in raising financial standards of  the general population, the luxuries that are a symbol of wealth, are commonly used. These luxuries include television, cars, computers and other accessories that decrease the physical movement of an individual. This is one of the main reasons why the level of obesity in Urban China is higher than rural areas .Hung et al.(2013) states in their study that China’s obesity is actually a “wealth deficit problem” where the more richer you are, the fatter you become. Also the opening of famous food chains like McDonalds, Pizza Hut or KFC in China has largely changed their traditional patterns of eating. The young generation loves eating fast food just like other nations that result in increasing obesity levels amongst the young population.

China until the recent past, faced nutritional challenges as many people suffered from malnutrition, were underweight or used to be hungry. But the scenario is totally the opposite now. China is a country where roads used to only have motorbikes or bicycles once but now they are all packed with cars throughout the day. The overall growth of the economy backed by state policy for having shrunk families has left more disposable income in a common individual’s hand. This has resulted in giving them a high living standard where they are enjoying all the luxuries in life. But this westernized and luxurious life style has brought the same health problems to China that the other developed economies are facing. In a pursuit to enjoy a comfortable living, the Chinese population has also become less active than their ancestors and this lack of physical activity is leading towards increasing obesity in their country.

The present study focuses on the main reasons that have contributed towards increasing the obesity levels in USA, KSA and China. The results of the study revealed that the major reasons for the high level of obesity present in the American society is the increasing intake of fast foods, lack of healthy food intake based on the calorie count, avoidance of physical activities, lack of healthy outdoor sports activities for students in school, genetic influences and the use of medications like steroids or nerve relaxants. These factors are a result of social, economic and cultural changes that have occurred in the American society over the past few decades.

The reasons about alarming obesity and overweight issues in a Saudi society are attributed to the cultural and economic changes that have taken place in Saudi Arabia during the last two decades. The increase in social status has led to make the Saudi population less active that not only include adults but also involves children. The main reasons of obesity in Saudi Arabia, as reported by the study, are increased food intake with low physical activity. The reasons for low physical activity stated in this study are due to lack of indoor and outdoor sports facilities and the presence of hot climate that does not encourage involvement of physical activities.

The findings of the study about China also portrayed the existence of obesity due to the cultural and economic uplift of the Chinese society. Due to high living standards and commitments in schools and offices, the population has become less interested in getting involved in physical activities. The patterns of eating have changed and the level of obesity has risen. However, there exists a major difference between the urban and rural population in the obesity levels where rural population has potentially low levels of obesity as compared to Chinese urban population.

The nutritional transition and change in dietary patterns occurring due to urbanization is assumed to be the major cause of the obesity epidemic. A lot of literature has been documented to highlight the world wide shift of changing diet routines. The intake of foods having high fats and carbohydrates with a reduced usage of vegetables, fibrous food and fruits is creating an imbalance in the calorie intake required by the bodies. The insufficient physical activity has become a major risk factor for increasing obesity “as work-related activity has declined over recent decades in industrialized countries” (Chan &Woo,2010). Such social, cultural and economic changes brought in the countries like USA, Saudi Arabia and China have resulted in increasing the obesity levels in these countries to an alarming extent. Efforts are required to be encouraged at national and International level to increase awareness about the hazards related to obesity in order to control the spread of this epidemic to other countries of the world.

second outline for ( Obesity )

Why I chose this topic:
I have selected the topic of obesity in America because obesity is on the rise in America. Young children and teenagers as well as adults, are also suffering from it. It is making people lazy and more alarmingly obese. It makes them look D shaped, and it leads to other diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases and liver problems.
Obesity is a big issue in the USA and needs to be controlled. My research paper will reveal the causes of obesity, its effects and also the measures that can be taken in order to control, the rising obesity in America. An in-depth analysis of obesity related problems will help the readers realize how the weight gaining can be controlled. The research will be a positive contribution towards maintaining a good health.

Thesis Statement:
Obesity from junk food and less physical activity has today become a part of the American Lifestyle. Taste over health, work over health is a choice we have to make every day as Americans.

            Body 1:
Obesity is another name for being dangerously over weight, and is becoming a global problem, more than just an American. According to a research conducted by the WHO in 2005, around 1.6 billion adults were obese, whereas 20 million of those under the age of five were over weighted. Obesity causes numerous diseases, and is a serious medical condition, chronic diseases combined with blood pressure and many other fatal diseases being a few of many (Biltekoff, 2007).
            A. U.S.A has emerged as one the most powerful nations on the face of the world and with all the power and development there should have been a considerable development regarding health care and life expectancy.
            B. There has been quite some of this development, but the average American lifestyle has transformed into a frenzy, that is bubbling upon unhealthy practices. With health a second priority and money first, there is never enough time to exercise or have a proper meal.
            Body 2:
The food that is healthy and available on the go, is very expensive and many of those who are struggling to make a living find it impossible to be able to afford anything but the cheap junk food that has become the national food of the country. With the ever increasing rate of obesity, we see many more people concerned with their health, and this is all because of all the ongoing awareness regarding obesity (Colleen L. Barry, 2009).
            A. There are various reasons for this increase, American lifestyle being the foundations of it. The average American lifestyle employs all weight gaining practices, and on an average with the junk food and unhealthy eating habits they consume some 3,767 calories, on an average a day.
            B. And with little or no interest in the recommended physical activity to burn these calories and only three out of every ten people are able to get this essential amount of physical activity.
            Body 3:
An average U.S person is able to burn just about 1850 calories on a regular day, this means an excess of 1900 calories everyday which makes it definite for them to put on weight, with an expenditure of around a 25 million dollars by the food industry, more unhealthy food is produced and provided to consumers than healthy food. This is because of the popularity of this unhealthy Junk food that has infused itself as an inseparable part of our society (Martin, 2005).
            A.
This junk food is made up of some unhealthy additives; the food is over cooked and over processed and is therefore hardly a source of the essential nutrients required by the body for a proper growth. The food provides lesser energy and with slow break down leads to more storage of energy hence the overweight.
            B. Watching too much TV in time that you could have otherwise dedicated to a physical activity and the replacement of video games for physical sports is yet another cause for this rising concern regarding obesity (Panagopoulos, 2006).

Conclusion:
How certain things are represented and symbolized is subjected to change, historically and socially, as people develop different tastes with time, foods and flavors infuse and with the fast pace and the ever tempting delicacies called the fast food, we find a resistance almost futile. This paper focuses on how a person is exploited by media to get more attention through the creation of interest; they are attracted towards Junk food (Miller, 2013). These representations have gone through a process of selection, construction and have been encoded with different preferences dependent on what will appeal the audience more, hence increasing both the taste for this unhealthy food as well its sales. The average American lifestyle has no room for a healthy life style, this maybe yet another reason for the ever increasing obesity (Anja Hilbert, 2007).

Third Interview

Describe my preparations

This task is very unique and I was really excited when I first got it. I thought it was going to be really hard but it turned out to be quite a lot of fun. It also proved to be a great learning experience and I learned quiet a lot about different countries, their culture and traditions etc. I interviewed people belonging to different culture so as to better understand the perception of different people and also to bring diversity .The country that I choose is Kenya. I choose the country as it is quite different from our country also I know almost nothing about this country so I choose it so as to find out and learn more about it, its people, traditions etc.

I started my task with formulating a questionnaire. I was really very careful when framing the questionnaire. I made sure to frame the questions in such a way that it did not get too personal or even a little bit offensive. I kept the questions simple and open ended. For the interview I made a list of fifteen questions which are as follows:

1-Do you like the weather in St.Cloud? Please explain
2- What do you do for leisure?
3- Could you please tell me about yourself?
4- How often do you communicate with your family back at home?
5- What is the biggest holiday in your country? Please explain about the holidays (Activities, Food, Date, Origin, and etc,)
6- In what ways might it be difficult to practice your religion here in the U.S?

I went to St. Cloud University and found an energetic Kenyan who was ready to help me out and give an interview. The candidate I choose for the interview was a boy named Kemal.K. I informed the candidate about the interview and explained him about the survey that I was doing. I was both anxious and nervous about the interview but it turned out to be great. He was really friendly and answered in detail as he was eager to help me out. He was really open minded and discussed about his culture and family in great detail. Also he easily and in detail discussed both good as well as the bad aspects of his beloved country. The interview went on quiet good as far as I think I recorded the interview on a tape so that I could replay it later on. The interview went on good and I also got to learn a lot of new things about Kenyan culture and the changes it has gone through.

Interview report on how the interviewing went

I met with Kemal.K on the 6th of November 2013. The interview went on for around 58 minutes.I taped the interview so that later I could easily put it in writing later on. I taped the interview so that I could give my full attention to the candidates. The interview went on quiet well and I learned quiet a lot.

As the interview unfolded I observed that the candidate was a patriot and he had a really deep affection for his country, he deeply valued his cultures and traditions and followed them too no matter where he was or where he went, he kept his country and everything related to it close to his heart. I learned a lot about the absolute appalling conditions of Kenya, how under developed it was and how a lot of people did not even have the basic necessities of life.

Kemal was really kind and patient and generous with his time, not once did it seem to me that he was bored or wanted to get away as soon as possible. He gave me his full attention. Kemal had a really positive outlook about everything and was open to new things and ideas.

Report on country/region and culture

Kenya has a rich and unique culture that has preserved established traditions throughout history. Culture of Kenya has countless sources, and the region is crisscrossed by the paths of a really long and a complex history. Since the times of prehistoric records of early men to the present day and time Kenya has always been a land of unending changes, contrasts and diversity. Mainstream religions like Christianity and Islam are widespread yet on the other hand many followers of these faiths still believe strongly in the ancestor world which implies that the dead have power for good or bad over their living descendants. They believe firmly in reincarnation too. And more then often a child is thought to possess the soul of his ancestor. Things are changing over times but still the roots remain especially in the rural areas.

In early years there was always a cycle of shifting power and migration of different tribes, tribes saw Kenya as a meeting ground, apart from this the sea also brought with it the influences from the outside world, and the passage of the spice trade created the unique coastal culture.

Kenya is a multilingual country and around 62 languages are spoken there. But the official languages are Swahili and English. Kenya has a very diverse population 38% of the population is protestant, 28% are Roman Catholic, animist comprises of 26% of the population while 7% are Muslims and the remaining 1% follow other religions. In the traditional Kenyan religion people known as diviners, are believed to possess the power of communicating with the spirits of the spirit world. People believe them to hold certain powers using which they cure people of diseases or evil spirits. They are also called upon to pray and help bring rain in times of drought. They also believe in sorcerers and witches and that they too have powers but unlike diviners they use their power to harm rather than to help and protect.

The main celebrations in Kenya are namely the New Year and Labor Day. Other holidays that are an integral part and the main festivals of Kenya include Madaraka Day which is basically the anniversary of self-rule, the Moi Day which is commemorating the president's installation in office, Independence Day which is also known as Jamhuri Day in the local language and the Harambee Day, this festival includes a large parade in the capital city and celebrations are enjoyed throughout the country. There are also numerous other festivals that are celebrated in Kenya. Weddings are important occasions throughout the country, and they are celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm. The celebrations go up to eight days, and are filled with music, dance, and special foods and lots of fun.

Kenya has taken the influence of all the countries and developed its own unique culture and herein lays the nation’s greatest strength. Kenya has the ability to blend the best of the many worlds into a strong, singular identity and a unified culture. Today Kenya has developed itself a lot; it welcomes the world to its shores. Furthermore Kenya continues to grow and evolve, it has a modern culture that is born via endless variety, and yet it is purely and proudly Kenyan.

A) First, I would like to thank you for your time this
afternoon For letting me do the interview with you.
K)  That's Ok. I am glad to hear from you.

A)    So do you like the weather in St.Cloud? Please explain.
K) Yes as a matter of fact I love the weather here. St. Cloud has a humid continental climate with warm summers and no dry season, and warm summers are something we all look forward to. Kenya too has great weather; I love it there as well. Weather here and back in Kenya is quiet similar that is another reason why I live it here so much. It reminds me of my country. Also the best part about St. Cloud’s weather is that it has no dry season, I am not a fan of dry season thus I absolutely love it here. The city of St. Cloud is very hot in summer and very cold with snow in winter and as I like both weathers I love it here.

A) Hmmm nice .And what do you do for leisure?
K) Well I love to read so I read whenever I get time. I am an extrovert kind of a person. I love interacting with people of differing cultures, meet new people and make new friends. I also enjoy cooking a lot. Often I experiment in the kitchen and come up with new dishes. My friends and my family back home are just in love with my cooking skills. I am not a great artist still I love to paint especially when I am angry, depressed or frustrated. Painting for me is basically a medium to vent out my feelings and rent out my anger. Apart from this I also spend my leisure time either hanging out with friends, or reading. You can say I am a multi talented person. I love to to out new things.

A) Could you please tell me about yourself?
K) Oh yes sure. Well hmm I belong to Kenya. I live in Nairobi which is the largest city as well as the capital. I am really an extrovert kind of a person. I love meeting new people. I enjoy travelling a lot. Apart from that I am a diligent and a hard worker. I love challenges and meeting tough deadlines. I am a leader and I do not like to follow. But that does not mean that I am not a team worker. I am really good when it comes to team working; it is just that I do better when I am a leader. I set high regard fir rules and regulations and full fill them. I am a patriot I am completely in love with my country. I am very responsible and I possess good communication skills and have a power to persuade people.

A) What is your language? How many languages do you speak? How many languages in your country?
K) Kenya is a multilingual country and around 62 languages are spoken there. But the official languages are Swahili and English. I speak French, Swahili and English.

A)  How often do you communicate with your family back at home?
K) Ours is a very closely knit family so we tend to talk to each other about 4 to 5 times a week no matter how busy life gets we manage to take out time for each other. We share everything from the smallest of things to the biggest secrets of our lives. My sister is my best friend, she is married still we talk about 2 times a week and it’s a lot of fun, we crack jokes share secrets and everything.

A)  What is the biggest holiday in your country? Please explain about the holidays (Activities, Food, Date, Origin, and etc,)
K) There are a lot of festivals that we celebrate but the most prominent and well known is Mombasa Carnival. It basically is a celebration of the traditions and ethnicity of tribes in Kenya. It is a really vibrant festival and is celebrated in November in the city of Mombasa. It is a city that has been influenced by African and Arabic customs for many years. For this reason, it portrays African and Arabian cultures really well. Multinational floats and colorful parades, dance and music are some of the integral parts of the carnival. People often stroll through the streets in unusual costumes the entire day. Stalls are set up, and they sell a wide range of goods and special Kenyan dishes. It is a fun filled and a must have experience. It is really fun and we enjoy it a lot with our friends and family. It shows all the true colors of our beautiful culture.

A)  In what ways might it be difficult to practice your religion here in the U.S?
K) It is not at all to practice my religion here in United States as I am a Christian, which is the main religion of United States. Also I firmly believe that religion lies within us and no matter what the situation is or the place is we can always practice it. I am a really religious person and I practice my religion with great ease in US.

A)  Tell me some important things from your culture?
K) Well our culture is a mix and a blend of many. Religions like Christianity and Islam are widespread but still at this age and time many followers of these faiths still believe strongly in the ancestor world. They believe that the dead have the power for good and bad over their living descendants. They also firmly believe that when one dies they enter the spirit world and the spirit world has great influence in the world of the living. Apart from this people also very firmly believe in reincarnation, and right from childhood we are thought to be the embodiment of the souls of a family's ancestors who died. But now as people are getting educated things and perceptions are changing. I m self do not believe in the spirit worlds and people coming back and all.

A) What’s the biggest difference between the American culture and your culture?
K) Our culture differs from American culture in all ways. There is really no comparison at all, though we are Christians too still our culture differs from that of United States by leaps and bounds.

A)    What are your goals for the future; after you graduate, what are you going to do?
K) Well my first goal is of meeting other people that have the same career field that I do. I love meeting new people and learning about different cultures and traits. Secondly, I would like to improve myself using education, making me a better well known individual so that I may bring around a positive change in my country as we are still under developed. Thirdly, and finally, I would like to graduate and get a good job as a marketing head at a reputable multinational with a good salary package and benefits.

A) What is your favorite Sport?
K) I am not at all a sports person; back at school I always hated gym class. Still I like to watch cricket and baseball matches, but I am not a fan.

A) How did you choose your major?
K) I choose this major because I am very creative, innovative and open to new ideas, in short all the skills necessary to make a good marketer. Also I always wanted to do something creative and I am really good at it. Also marketing is the area I am really good at, I am not at all good with numbers.

A) How do you celebrate holidays?
K) I spend my holidays with family and friends. I cook for them; we have slumber parties, dance food, movies gossips and a lot of fun. We share stories and have a really fun filled time. We keep things simple but have a lot of fun.

A) Where do you prefer your home country or here? Why?
K) Well both have its advantages and disadvantages. I love both. There I have my family and my roots while here I have great friends and a great future.

A) Well that’s all from my side, do you have any questions for me?
K) Oh as a matter of fact yes I do. What do you think about Kenya? What is your perception about our country?

A) Interesting question. Well I always perceived Kenya to be a very under developed country, with famine, illiteracy everywhere. But now I can see so is not the case completely. People are changing, they are getting educated and their perceptions too are changing.
